The impact of layer height

The layer height is an important design parameter that impacts the printing time, cost, visual appearance and physical properties of a printed part. To decide on the layer height, the functionality, geometry and post-processing of the print needs to be taken into account.

When printing a functional part, using a higher layer height improves the mechanical performance. For visual appearances a lower layer height will provide the best results. However, printing at a lower layer height increases the printing time and the costs. Also, if the print will be post-processed, printing at a higher layer height is preferred.
